Lofts, towers and the buildings in between
Downtown's housing is mostly vertical. In the Historic Core, along Broadway, Spring and Main, a lot of homes are lofts carved out of old bank and office buildings, many of them converted after the city adopted its adaptive reuse rules in 1999. The Arts District has lofts in former warehouses and industrial buildings. Bunker Hill and South Park lean toward modern high-rise apartments and condos, and Little Tokyo and the Fashion District add their own mix of mid-rise apartments and lofts.

Where the tree ends up depends on which you have. In a loft, it often anchors the open living space, near those tall industrial windows. In a tower unit, it's usually a corner by the glass, where it can be seen from the street at night. Either way, the path matters: lobby, hallway, elevator, front door.
